Tartufo dessert: the ice cream ball from Calabria
In short: on the dessert menu, a tartufo is not a fungus but an ice cream dessert: a ball of ice cream, often with a soft centre, rolled in cocoa, nuts or a crunchy coating so it looks like a truffle. The best known is the tartufo di Pizzo from Calabria.
Where does the tartufo come from?
The tartufo di Pizzo was created in the 1950s in the seaside town of Pizzo in Calabria. The classic recipe is hazelnut and chocolate ice cream with a molten chocolate centre, dusted with cocoa. Today there are countless flavours.
