Tiramisù: the dessert that picks you up
In short: tiramisù is an Italian dessert of ladyfingers (savoiardi) dipped in espresso, a cream of mascarpone, egg and sugar, and a dusting of cocoa. The name means "pick me up", thanks to the coffee and sugar.

Where does tiramisù come from?
Tiramisù is younger than you might think: it became known in the 1960s and 1970s in Veneto, with Treviso as its best-known birthplace. Friuli-Venezia Giulia also claims the invention. From north-eastern Italy it conquered the world.
What goes into it?
- Ladyfingers (savoiardi), briefly dipped in strong espresso
- Mascarpone, a creamy fresh cheese from Lombardy
- Eggs and sugar
- Cocoa powder on top
